We were on our way to visit friends up in the mountains and decided to do a round about tour of Yosemite National Park.
You can’t stay in Yosemite even if you wanted to. You have to make reservations years in advance, and if you do get a spot, you’re packed in like sardines next to another family of campers. We’re all about the free dispersed camping so we opted to find a free camping spot using www.freecampsites.net. About an hour southwest of Yosemite, we came across Nedler Grove Campground.
Grassy meadow and giant sequoia remains
The remains of hundreds of giant Sequoias grace this land. It’s a place where I could imagine dinosaurs cruising through the monster trees. The place was heavily logged back in the 1800’s. Gratefully, a few of the giants were left untouched to awe generations to come.
Giant Sequoia still stands
Bull Buck was the name given to one of the oldest Sequoia trees that is still standing. Its only about a 10 minute walk from the main campground. I’m not even going to try to post a picture of it, it doesn’t fit, and it is worth the journey to see its magnificence in person.
Nedler Grove Campground Creek
It’s primitive (they have a couple port-o-potties and pit toilets). There’s no plumbing but a creek runs through both sides of the campground and if you walk down the canyon a bit, there are some beautiful waterfalls cascading the grant walls.
We boondocked it next to this giant stump. Mosquitoes were a little bit of a nuisance at dusk but not so bad most of the day. This place is definitely a must see on your way to your Sierra destination.
