Here’s our entry to the “I WWOOF Because…” Video contest. Watch footage from four different farms over two years. This is what we have been up to the last couple years on the road.
WWOOF literally means Willing Workers On Organic Farms. To those who don’t know what “WWOOFing” is, it is one of the world’s first educational and cultural exchange programs. Today, WWOOF is in more than 132 countries around the world (and growing), with a wide range of farm stay opportunities. Visitors, or ‘WWOOFers’, spend about half of each day helping out on a farm, learn about organic agriculture, and receive free room and board during their visit.
WWOOFing as a lifestyle
We as a family have had a blast helping out on the different organic farms around the country. Some of the places in the video are located in California, Utah, and Colorado. Our oldest son has spent a good portion of his life on these farms. At the age of two, he has already had hands on experience in caring for chickens, goats, organic gardening, and sustainable living. In our experiences, we have had the most delicious, freshest, organic meat and vegetables WWOOFing. The hosts usually put their heart and soul into what they’re doing.
Most of these places have the minimal living comforts – shared bath house, composting toilets, community kitchen and living. Private accommodations usually include tent camping, RV, or tiny home. It is great learning about alternative ways of living. Sharing work and life with other willing people will always be a memorable experience.
